The Mental Benefits of Exercise

What do you do when you are stressed out? Feeling sad? Overwhelmed? Anxious about something happening at school?

Some people might become introverted and separate themselves from everyone around them. Some might eat to make themselves feel better.

These things may help, but may not be the healthiest options.

Have you ever thought about exercise as a way to help you through your emotions?

What Are the Benefits?

Research shows participating in some sort of aerobic activity for 30 to 60 minutes a day can:

  • Improve your mood
  • Boost your confidence and self-image
  • Relieve stress
  • Improve sleep, which helps sharpen your thinking and give you more energy

So if exercise can do all of these things for us - why not exercise?

How Can I Find the Time and Motivation To Exercise?

There can be barriers to exercising regularly, based on your schedule, your motivation or just nerves about trying something new. Organized sports aren’t for everyone, but they are a great way to exercise.

If organized sports are not your thing, try these ideas:

  • Take a walk or run around your neighborhood
  • Find a group yoga or fitness class
  • Find a YouTube fitness video to take you through exercises
  • Go for a bike ride
  • Climb the stairs instead of using the elevator
  • Find a friend or family member to join an activity with you

There are so many ways that you can get out and move your body to help you reap the mental benefits of exercise. Go find what you like the best!
