Catherine Krawczeski, MD, Named Chief Medical Officer and Physician-in-Chief
Catherine Krawczeski, MD, the hospital’s physician-in-chief since 2022, will now also serve as Nationwide Children’s chief medical officer. Dr. Krawczeski will continue in her positions as physician-in-chief and chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s, and chair of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
In this newly combined role, Dr. Krawczeski will continue to develop physician leaders while ensuring the overall quality of medical services and providing both the clinical and academic perspectives to support the hospital’s vision and strategy.

Nationwide Children’s Names Jason Newland, MD, MEd, Chief of Infectious Diseases
Nationwide Children’s welcomes Jason Newland, MD, MEd, as the division chief of Infectious Diseases and an associate investigator in the Center for Child Health Equity and Outcomes Research in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s. Dr. Newland is also a tenured professor at The Ohio State University and will hold the Cramblett Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Newland’s research interests are focused on the establishment and impacts of antimicrobial stewardship programs in children’s hospitals. In 2013, Dr. Newland co-founded the Sharing Antimicrobial Reports for Pediatric Stewardship (SHARPS) Collaborative, a national collaboration of over 60 children’s hospitals dedicated to the appropriate use of antibiotics for children. He also co-directed the Antimicrobial Stewardship Council through BJC Healthcare from 2017 to 2023 and was the antimicrobial stewardship program director at St. Louis Children’s Hospital from 2016 to 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Newland led efforts to evaluate the rate of transmission in school in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most recently, he has been appointed the vice-chair of the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria.
Dr. Newland joins Nationwide Children’s from St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University, where he held the Schnuck Family Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts and is active in multiple professional societies and organizations. His current research includes leading a multicenter AHRQ R01-funded study on the best strategies to eliminate unnecessary postoperative antibiotics.
Nationwide Children’s Appoints New Division Chief of Cardiology and Co-director of the Heart Center
Nationwide Children’s welcomes Antonio Cabrera, MD, FAAP, FAHA, FACC, FHFSA, as the division chief of cardiology and co-director of the Heart Center. Dr. Cabrera has been appointed professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University and holds the Nationwide George H. Dunlap Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiology. Previously, Dr. Cabrera served as the L. George Veasy Presidential Professor at the University of Utah and co-director of the Heart Center at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dr. Cabrera is trained in pediatrics, cardiology, cardiac critical care, heart failure/transplantation and medical education. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Heart Failure Society of America. He has lectured extensively across the globe. In addition, Dr. Cabrera was the co-principal investigator of the institutional NIH/NHLBI Pediatric Heart Network grant at the University of Utah.
Dr. Cabrera graduated from Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala. He completed his internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital of the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital/Case Western Reserve University and advanced training in Cardiovascular Critical Care at Arkansas Children’s Hospital/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
2024 Clinical Well-being Summit
The Fourth National Summit on Promoting Well-being and Resilience in Health Care Professionals will take place October 23-25, at the Hilton Columbus Downtown. This national forum will focus on enhancing well-being, resilience and healthy lifestyle behaviors across all health care professions and health sciences students. Presentations will focus on factors contributing to burnout and resilience, effective interventions to reduce the risks of burnout and promote healthy lifestyle behaviors, and changes to the systems and cultures of healthcare settings that improve employee well-being and resilience. This summit is a collaborative initiative amongst Wexner Medical Center, the Ohio State Health Sciences, Fisher College of Business, the College of Social Work, the National Academy of Medicine and Nationwide Children’s.
