Biography

Joseph Drew Tobias, MD joined Nationwide Children's Hospital in 2010 as chief of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine. Dr. Tobias oversees Anesthesia Services, Pain Medicine and Sedation across the hospital. He leads the Nationwide Children's Hospital Anesthesiology team in the management of anesthesia care for the entire spectrum of surgical diseases from complex congenital heart surgery through solid organ transplantation. Dr. Tobias came to Nationwide Children's Hospital from the University of Missouri Hospital & Clinics in Columbia, Missouri.

Nationally recognized as one of America's Best Doctors, he is active in numerous societies, including the American Society of Anesthesiology, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Society for Pediatric Research and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia. He has been widely published in numerous professional publications and is actively involved in research and teaching. His research interests include nitrous oxide for procedural sedation, applications of methadone in children, neuromonitoring using near infrared spectroscopy, continuous peripheral nerve blockade with disposable outpatient devices and the use of new pharmacologic agents such as clevidipine and dexmedetomidine in the pediatric population.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine elected Joseph D. Tobias, MD, FAAP, Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital, to the position of Chairperson-Elect. Dr. Tobias began his two-year term in this role on November 1, 2011, and will subsequently begin a two-year term as Chairperson of the Section on November 1, 2013.
