Meet Karson

At 31 weeks and 6 days, I was induced almost 8 weeks early due to severe symptoms from preeclampsia. Karson spent two and an half months in the NICU. He was on a ventilator, a cpap, had a feeding tube and almost the whole time he was admitted he had low blood sugar. After what felt like forever, he eventually grew out of all these things one by one. After multiple genetic testing, the doctors at Nationwide Children’s discovered Karson had PTEN syndrome, also known as Cowden’s syndrome. This genetic disorder is rarely diagnosed in children. The nurses were seeing his head circumference grow and grow. The MRI’s showed his ventricles were very large. When Karson was just 3 months old he had a surgery which involved installing a VP shunt in his brain to drain the spinal fluid off his brain that was causing pressure on his brain. Karson is 1.5 years old now and is happy healthy and thriving. A big thank you of the doctors and staff we were blessed with at Nationwide Children’s for all the time and care they put into our son. We are forever grateful.

Children with PTEN syndrome benefit from specialized care, monitoring, and support tailored to their unique needs.
