What You Need To Know

Eligibility & Selection

Candidates for the internship must be seeking the internship as a fulfillment requirement for college graduation but need no specific qualifications other than an interest in a health care/fitness field. Coupled with our truly unique patient population, this multi-dimensional internship will allow you to implement classroom learning in a real world setting.

This internship is offered year round based on the academic calendar. All posted deadlines are flexible as we will continue to accept applications until qualified candidates are secured. Please contact the Play Strong team (PlayStrongIntern@NationwideChildrens.org) with any questions.

Curriculum

Each week the patients and their parent(s)/support person(s) attend two 60 minute sessions that include physical activity as well as patient and parent education. We utilize “play” in an attempt to change the patients’ attitudes towards physical activity and to enhance enjoyment of the sessions. We focus on motivation and goal-setting to change habits at home. Finally, we aim to improve functional movement skills and confidence with activities.

As an intern, you would be involved in leading the group exercises, conducting patient interviews, and performing goal setting with individual patients. Administratively, you would also have the opportunity to participate in research, data collection and program design.

This internship requires approximately 12 hours of service weekly and takes place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Interns will be expected to participate in two of these evening classes from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. with additional administrative hours required at flexible times based on student and staff availability.
