A Family's Journey with Rare Disease | The Power of Knowing

Ghaith was born in March of 2023, via uncomplicated Cesarean section at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Ten minutes later, he made history by receiving his first infusion of a medication that effectively halted the damage that had started to accumulate in his brain as a result of molybdenum cofactor deficiency (MoCD) type A. Ghaith received the earliest administration of treatment for MoCD known to our team.

There is no cure for spina bifida. But with fetal surgery, there is hope. During her 20 week ultrasound, Brittany's life forever changed with two words: spina bifida. Not knowing exactly what that diagnosis meant for her family, Brittany and her husband started researching. That research lead them to the experts here at Nationwide Children's Hospital. We have some of the best surgeons in the world, and we have the Ohio Fetal Medicine Collaborative. Not only can we treat spina bifida but a long list of other complex birth defects.

Lexi’s Journey | One Year After Fetal Surgery for Spina Bifida

More than a year after surgery at the Fetal Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to repair their baby’s spina bifida in the womb, the Badenhop family is celebrating Lexi’s progress as she turns one. “To look at Lexi, you would never suspect that there's something different about her,” said Lexi's mom. “You would never suspect that she is a child with spina bifida unless you saw the little scar on her back. She looks like a typical child who is the happiest baby you've ever seen, smiling, laughing, having fun with her sister.”
