Kids and Concussions
A Roadmap to Recovery
Building the Leading Treatment Center for Pediatric Concussions
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head. Children need to be treated by providers who understand the developing brains of kids.
The Concussion Center at Nationwide Children’s is an innovative place that specializes in treating kids and young adults. It’s a place where the focus on cutting-edge care, research and community partnerships builds a network of expertise like no place else. It’s a place where mental health is equally important as physical health.
Concussion treatment is not a one size fits all approach. It takes a team of health care providers with different areas of expertise to help your child get back to doing what they love. That’s why Nationwide Children’s has three unique clinics to treat children’s different needs. We offer multiple locations to ensure your child gets the care they need at a time and place that works for you.
One Concussion Center With Three Specialty Clinics
The Concussion Center at Nationwide Children’s includes a team of sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, psychology, physical therapy and athletic training specialists to best manage pediatric concussions. Each clinic focuses on:
- Safe Return to Play – Athletic trainers and physicians help your child safely return to activities and sports. Our team directly communicates with school coaches and athletic trainers to support this process.
- Return to Learn – Concussions can affect how children think and learn. Our providers will work with your child’s school to support their academic needs as they recover.
- Focus on Mental Health – Mental health screens are important during all stages of concussion care. Each clinic works with psychology and neuropsychology providers to respond to mental health concerns that may arise during recovery.
- Medical Treatments – Physicians help your child’s symptoms such as headache by providing medications and other treatments.

Leading the Way to New Treatments and Outcomes Through Clinical Research
Clinical care and research work together. This helps scientists and doctors to find new treatments and therapies. Through research, the Concussion Center is at the cutting edge of pediatric concussion care.
You might hear about a clinical study that your child may be able to join. If you decide to not join a study, your care will never be affected. You always have the choice about whether to join a study.
Below are current research studies at the Concussion Center.
Our providers are shaping the future of concussion care through research. Our providers have led, or collaborated with others, to publish more than 100 studies about concussion diagnosis and management, brain and head injuries, post-concussive symptoms and more.
