Imaging Team

Ours is a multidisciplinary team consisting of healthcare and informatics professionals working together to provide high quality digital images to our customers.

Mary McNulty

Imaging Manager, Biomedical Imaging Team

Nilsa Del Carmen Ramirez-Milan, MD

Medical Director, Biopathology Center CO-I, Nationwide Children's Hospital

Lead Pathologist, TCGA BCR Director, Autopsy Pathology, Nationwide Children's Hospital

Dr. Nilsa Ramirez is an anatomic pathologist with subspecialty training in gynecologic and obstetrical pathology, as well as an associate professor of pathology at The Ohio State University. The Biopathology Center houses the biobanking efforts of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), the Children’s Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS), the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP), and the Strategic Partnering to Evaluate Cancer Signatures (SPECS) program in sarcomas. Dr. Ramirez is the principal investigator of the COG Tissue Bank, the GOG Tissue Bank, and the pediatric division of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN). She is co-investigator and lead pathologist of the Biospecimen Core Resource of The Cancer Genome Atlas project, also housed at the Biopathology Center. She is knowledgeable and experienced in the histopathologic diagnosis of tumors, and in the technology of preserving tissues for biologic research.

Kathleen Nicol, MD

Vice Chair/Section Chief, Clinical Pathology, Nationwide Children's Hospital

Vice Chair, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Nationwide Children's Hospital

Director of Transfusion Services, Nationwide Children's Hospital

Dr. Kathleen Nicol, also a clinical associate professor of pathology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, is board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology and pediatric pathology and serves as a staff pathologist in the section of clinical and anatomic pathology. Her clinical interests are pediatric fine needle aspiration biopsy/cytology, and pediatric transfusion medicine, in addition to surgical pathology and laboratory medicine, including quality control and digital imaging.

Andrew Mullen

Biorepository Protocol Coordinator, Biopathology Center

Andrew Mullen holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Kent State University. At KSU Andrew spent a lot of time doing various biological research, including a year of independent research in the neurophysiology department. There he learned his passion for research and the computational/technological side that goes hand-and-hand with it. He spent some time at St. Ann’s hospital in their pathology department working as a lab assistant, assisting in pathological specimen collection and staining. Andrews role as an imaging specialist in the Biopathology center includes the conversion of pathological slides into digital images using the digital imaging machines and supporting the Imaging coordinators.

Shital Hobensack

Biorepository Laboratory Supervisor, Biopathology Center

Shital Hobensack has over 7 years of experience as a biomedical imaging technician and biomedical research associate in field of digital pathology. Shital has a master's degree in biomedical engineering with a concentration in imaging from Wright State University. Shital's responsibilities include working with multiple medical imaging modalities, coordinating digital pathology review for Biospecimen Core Resource projects, providing technical guidance and training, and conducting independent research. She has experience in the areas of MATLAB programming, graphical user interfaces (GUI) and medical image processing along with two years research experience. Shital previously worked at Holy Family Hospital in India for one year as a biomedical engineer.

Cody Pizzola

Biomedical Imaging Specialist, Biopathology Center

Cody Pizzola has a bachelor’s of science in Biological Engineering from The Ohio State University, with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Cody has previous experience working on a NASA design team for their Project exploration Systems and Habitation, focusing on the reuse of 3-D printed growth substrate for sustainable plant farming in space. Cody’s responsibilities on the Imaging Team include the conversion of physical pathological tissue slides into digital images through use of digital microscopy imaging robots.
