Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Young Professional Council Fundraising in Collaboration with Lion Cub’s Cookies

November 11, 2021

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lion Cub’s Cookies (LCC) is collaborating with Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Young Professionals Council to support life-saving care and research that will ensure all children and families in central Ohio get the care they need, regardless of ability to pay. LCC will create a special edition cookie, inspired by two Nationwide Children’s Patient Champions, that will be sold from Nov. 11-14 at their Grandview bakery.

The limited-edition cookie is called Apple Jacks Caramel and features a base made of Kellogg’s® Apple Jacks® cereal and vanilla cookie dough and is filled with subtly salty caramel chips and creamy white chocolate chips, topped with a house made vanilla and apple jack frosting.

The inspiration for the cookie came from Patient Champions Corbin, age 9, and Payton, age 10. Patient Champions are current or former patients of Nationwide Children’s who share their inspirational stories and represent the hospital in a variety of fundraising events and opportunities.

• Corbin was 6 months old when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 neuroblastoma. He has endured four rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, tests, scans, shots and blood draws to treat his life-threatening tumor. The treatment process lasted six long months, but just before his first birthday, Corbin was declared in remission and has remained cancer-free for over five years.

• Payton was just one week old when doctors at Nationwide Children’s found a hole in her heart. She was diagnosed with pulmonary valve stenosis and after a surgery that patched the holes in her heart and a repair of one of the heart valves, Payton was able to go home. Today, Payton is 10 years old and thriving. She loves singing and making up songs, and spending time with her family.

Corbin and Payton brainstormed their dream cookie with LCC founder, Brad Kaplan, and even attended an in-shop test baking and tasting session to ensure the quality of cookies met their expectations.

This partnership brought together two organizations that are both focused on creating happiness and fundraising for important community causes.

“I’ve always had a vision for this company to always be truly apart of the local community here in Columbus," said Kaplan. "This partnership further brings that vision to life. It’s an honor to be associated with the people over at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. They are an integral part of the community here and have made such a massive impact on people’s lives, so to be in the same sentence as them is just amazing. This collaboration has been awesome, working with the children, getting to know them and their parents a bit has been such a pleasant experience too."

“Having the opportunity for the Young Professionals Council to work with a young, booming small business is great for our community," said Sarah Gattis of the Young Professionals Council. "We hope this partnership will be a long-term relationship with the continuing support of Nationwide Children's Hospital.”

In addition to featuring the limited-edition Apple Jack Caramel Cookie, LCC will also donate a portion of all cookie sales during the promotional period to support the patients and families at Nationwide Children’s.
