Steve Allen, MD Appointed Chair Childrens Hospital Association 2016 Board of Trustees

January 26, 2016

Steven Allen, MD, CEO of Nationwide Children's Hospital has been appointed chair the Board of Trustees of the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA). He began his term as board chair on January 1, 2016. Allen has served on the board since 2011 and chaired the public policy committee and the quality and safety committee prior to being appointed chair. As CEO of Nationwide Children’s in Columbus, Ohio, Allen is credited with leading the hospital’s rise to national prominence. Allen’s passion for population health and wellness inspired the hospital’s 2010-2015 strategic plan to create optimal health for every child in the community. Under his leadership, Nationwide has dramatically improved immunization rates, reduced prematurity rates, decreased readmission rates and increased access to pediatric health care through the hospital’s accountable care organization.

“Steve Allen is a passionate advocate for children’s health care and child health. As chair of CHA’s Board of Trustees, Steve’s leadership is essential as we work to improve health outcomes for kids through children’s hospitals’ relentless focus on quality and efforts to ensure the health care system considers the unique needs of children,” said Mark Wietecha, president and CEO. “We appreciate his and the board’s commitment to this important work and are confident their insights will advance the care of children’s in our hospitals and across the nation.”

“Children’s Hospital Association has established itself as a powerful advocate for children’s health care, and I am grateful to serve as this year’s chair,” said Allen. “While children have enjoyed a number of advances in access to quality care, as providers we must continue to advocate for resources and funding that elevate pediatric clinical care, education and research.”

Allen obtained his undergraduate education at Rice University, and his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Prior to joining Nationwide in 2006, Allen was a physician, scientist, teacher and executive in the Texas Medical Center in Houston for 24 years. Allen has published almost 100 articles and over 20 book chapters on a variety of medical topics. He is married to Jamie Allen, MD, and has five children.
