Media Advisory: The Don Johnson Family Picnic for Nationwide Childrens Hospital patients living with diabetes and their families

The Don Johnson Family Picnic for Nationwide Children’s Hospital patients living with diabetes and their families is an afternoon ‘country hoedown’ picnic with food, games, magicians and face painting. The picnic will feature ‘carb counts,’ which are so important to managing diabetes for the food provided at the event, as well as a private location for attendees to check their blood sugars.

Funded by the Don Johnson Memorial Team Bowling Tournament.

WHEN:  Sunday, September 29, 2013, Noon to 4 p.m.

WHERE:  Hickory Lakes, 12495 Ault Road, Pickerington, Ohio 43147

WHO:  More than 160 Nationwide Children’s Hospital diabetes patients and family members.

WHY:  The Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes multidisciplinary team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital cares for all aspects of their patients’ lives, including the normal fun activities of childhood.  The team’s goal is to empower families to successfully manage diabetes at home in order to provide as normal a life as possible for patients living with diabetes.  Physicians, advanced practitioners, diabetes educators, dietitians, social workers, diabetes nurses and a psychologist care for patients with Type 1 (“Juvenile”) diabetes and Type 2 (“Adult”) diabetes as well as less common forms such as inherited monogenic diabetes and MODY diabetes.
