ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
On Saturday afternoon, Moochie & Co. at Tuttle will host a special day honoring Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s very own four-legged “M.D.” – as in Medical Dog – Ansley, a 7-year-old black lab/golden retriever mix. A portion of the sales during the 2 – 4 p.m. event at Moochie & Co. will come back to help the patients at Nationwide Children’s. Former and current patients of the hospital that have benefited from Ansley’s warm, compassionate presence, and sometimes even his ‘sloppy kisses,’ have been invited to the event. Ansley encourages the public to come on out to stock up on treats and goodies for all those “Puppy Bowl” viewing parties airing ahead of the Super Bowl on Sunday!

Ansley, who just celebrated his five-year anniversary at Nationwide Children’s, works hard to help sick kids at the hospital get better. His job is called animal assisted therapy in which he works in combination with trained human therapists to help advance therapeutic goals for patients. When a child goes through physical therapy or speech therapy, working with Ansley can be one of the most important parts of their healing process, helping to determine how patients function independently later in life.

During physical or recreation therapy, Ansley helps patients work on motor skills. He can stand on his hind legs to help a child maintain balance. He walks with patients through obstacle courses and scavenger hunts throughout the hospital. He gets shy kids to open up and want to try and speak during their speech therapy lessons. These kids are going through tasks that challenge them, but they reach their goals with the encouragement and companionship of Ansley.

To support Ansley and the patients of Nationwide Children’s, companies like Moochie & Co. are participating in “Ansley’s Campaign” – a fundraising campaign – to bring awareness to the very special role he plays at the hospital.
