To help accommodate the growth of pediatric surgical services, Nationwide Children’s Hospital plans to open its first suburban surgery center. Located in Westerville, Ohio, the center will be an extension of the current surgery services on the main campus, giving patient families another option for convenient access to a full pediatric outpatient surgery team.
Scheduled to break ground in March 2011, the Westerville Surgery Center will be located near Nationwide Children’s Westerville Close To HomeSM Center and the Westerville Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center and at 495 Executive Campus Drive, Westerville, Ohio 43082.
The $18.4 million center, planned at 46,000 square feet, will offer two stories of patient care areas with the first floor housing outpatient ambulatory surgery. With four state-of-the-art operating rooms, the first floor also includes additional space which gives parents the opportunity to be with their child before and after surgery. This extended floor plan allows the patient to feel a sense of comfort with loved-ones at their side. The second floor will consist of pediatric surgical subspecialty clinics including plastic surgery and otolaryngology, complementing existing subspecialty clinics already on the Westerville campus.
“The addition of the Westerville Surgery Center will give patients and their families another option for outpatient surgical needs beyond the downtown campus,” said Rick Miller, president and chief operating officer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “We are committed to providing our patients and their families with the best possible care and this new center not only offers the convenience of an accessible facility, but also the world-class care our physicians provide each patient no matter the scope of their surgery.”
Nationwide Children’s Westerville Surgery Center is slated to open in early 2012 and will provide patients with the same family-centered care and access to a full pediatric specialist team they receive at the main hospital. The pediatric specialist team includes pediatric anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, subspecialty surgeons, pediatric surgical nursing staff and child-life specialists.
A total of 30 physicians will rotate throughout the center which will house 45 employees when it opens. Design Group will serve as the architect for the project.
“Nationwide Children’s Hospital already has a strong presence in Westerville, serving many residents, visitors and young athletes in the area,” said David A. Collinsworth, Westerville City manager. “Access to health care is an important community interest in Westerville, and the City is very pleased that Nationwide Children’s has chosen to expand their range of services here with this major investment."
