Nationwide Childrens Hospital to Host Farmers Markets

September 13, 2010

Fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods are being made available for employees, community residents and visitors at four Farmer’s Markets hosted by Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The next Farmer’s Market will be held on Monday, September 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. near Nationwide Children’s Human Resources building in parking lot E-4 on 18th Street across from the hospital’s Outpatient Care Center.

“The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Employee Wellness program invites all surrounding communities to our third annual Farmer’s Markets,” said Cindi Solomon, program coordinator. “Local residents are encouraged to shop healthy.” For the first time this year, most farmers will accept the Ohio EBT card, WIC and Senior coupons.

During the first Farmer’s Market in July, attendees browsed the market for fresh produce and gathered health information.  The second market in August included a cooking demonstration from Kari DuBro, employee wellness dietitian at Nationwide Children’s, who showed registered participants how to prepare some of the market’s produce and provided samples. The third market on September 13 will feature apple-tasting and the fourth market on October 4 will include a pumpkin decorating contest.

“Nationwide Children's Hospital's Farmer's Markets represent a great active living tool for their employees and a commitment to workplace wellness,” said Barb Seckler, director of the Institute for Active Living at Columbus Public Health. “By accepting the Ohio EBT card, Nationwide Children’s is expanding access to nutritious food to its employees and neighboring residents.”
