The Best Doctors list selection takes place through a peer-to-peer review process in which thousands of doctors participate. Only the current Best Doctors physicians receive the survey to nominate and vote for other doctors in their own and related specialties. During this 9- to 12-month period, doctors may also nominate and provide information on other physicians who they think should be considered in the peer review process.

The Best Doctors database contains names of more than 50,000 physicians worldwide in more than 400 subspecialties of medicine, all chosen through the peer-to-peer review process. Only physicians who earn a consensus of peer support and meet additional criteria researched by the Best Doctors staff are included on the list.
