Child magazine today announced the results of its fourth exclusive survey to identify the best childrens hospitals in America and for the first time Columbus Childrens Hospital is selected among the top 10 by securing sixth place. In subspecialty areas, Child magazine awarded Columbus Childrens first in the nation in providing outstanding pediatric emergency care, which includes Emergency Services and Trauma Services. Childrens is also honored with the following subspecialty recognitions; Pulmonary Medicine named fourth in the nation, Neonatology as fifth, Orthopedics ranking sixth and Childrens Hematology/Oncology is named as the tenth best cancer program in the country.

Columbus Childrens Hospital Emergency Department is the third busiest in the country, but more importantly it ranks number one in level of emergency care. Childrens Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center was the first in Ohio and the department is staffed by board certified/eligible pediatric emergency medicine subspecialists 24 hours a day. The Emergency Department provides expertise in pediatric advanced life support and resuscitation as well as evaluation and treatment in all areas of acute medical and surgical conditions. Urgent Care Services are provided on the main hospital campus as well as at three community-based Close To HomeSM Health Care Centers located in Dublin, East Columbus and Westerville.
The results of the comprehensive survey appear in the February 2007 issue of the magazine on newsstands January 9. Results were based on strict criteria and data compiled during the magazines extensive nine-month investigation.
The comprehensive 247-question survey, guided by the leading pediatric experts, examines vital medical information including survival rates, the number of complex procedures and intricate surgeries conducted, volume of research studies, efforts to reduce medical errors, and the quality and training of the doctors and nurses as well as child-friendliness, support for families and community involvement. The survey was sent to 116 full members of the National Association of Childrens Hospitals and Related Institutions last August. Seventy-six hospitals completed the survey. The responses were graded to determine the best hospitals overall and the leaders in six pediatric subspecialty areas.
