Laura Beth Kalvas, PhD, RN, is a Nurse Scientist in the Center for Nursing Excellence and Associate Faculty in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute Center for Biobehavioral Health at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kalvas received her BSN, MS, and PhD from The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Her pre-doctoral training in observational pediatric critical care research was supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 and F31 Fellowships. Dr. Kalvas completed post-doctoral training at The Ohio State Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Her post-doctoral training in clinical trial conduct was supported by NIH TL1 and F32 Fellowships.
Dr. Kalvas’s program of research focuses on nurse-led interventions that improve outcomes for critically ill children and their families, with a specific interest in circadian rhythm dysregulation, delirium, and post-intensive care syndrome. Dr. Kalvas also works with a national collaborative of nurse researchers to develop and test nurse-sensitive patient outcomes measures that operationalize the value of nursing care within the healthcare system.
In addition to her own program of research, Dr. Kalvas is passionate about engaging practicing nurses and advanced practice providers in clinical inquiry. She currently supervises multiple clinician-led initiatives throughout the hospital system focused on discharge education for children with medical complexity, safe firearm storage, moral distress, and workplace violence.
