Biography

Alexander J. R. Bishop, DPhil, is Director of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Richard J. Solove Endowed Chair in Cancer Clinical Developmental Therapeutics, and Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Bishop is a molecular geneticist and cancer biologist whose research has been guided by a fundamental question: how does a cell recognize that it has been damaged, and how does it respond?

Over more than 25 years, his research has approached this question from multiple perspectives, beginning with studies of DNA damage response and repair, homologous recombination, and inherited cancer predisposition syndromes, and more recently extending to transcriptional and metabolic stress in Ewing sarcoma, triple-negative breast cancer, and ataxia telangiectasia. His research is question-driven, drawing on the experimental systems and technologies best suited to understand the underlying biology. This approach has led his laboratory to integrate molecular and cell biology with functional genetic screening, genomics, multi-omic and computational approaches, and preclinical models to uncover mechanisms of cellular stress responses and identify therapeutic vulnerabilities.

As Director of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research, Dr. Bishop leads a multidisciplinary research community spanning fundamental discovery through translational pediatric oncology, with an emphasis on collaboration, scientific innovation, and training the next generation of cancer researchers.

Dysregulated Transcription Processes in Ewing Sarcoma Institution, Principal Investigator

Investigates how dysregulated transcription in Ewing sarcoma alters RNA polymerase II activity, R-loop biology and DNA damage responses, and how these changes create therapeutic vulnerabilities.
