Meet Malena

This is my daughter Malena Carroll's remarkable journey. She was born at 39 weeks at Avita Ontario Hospital in Mansfield, Ohio. Despite being born "dead" and coded pink, Malena's life was a testament to the power of medical intervention and divine intervention. She was born sunny side up, had her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck, shoulder presentation, and a hematoma on her head. During delivery, Malena was vacuum extracted while a nurse assisted with the delivery. After a harrowing start of her birth, the medical team successfully resuscitated her. We were overjoyed when Nationwide Children's Hospital transported her to their facility for further care. Upon arrival, Malena was diagnosed with jaundice and spent four days in the NICU, where she received therapy for her arm, and her hematoma shrunk. The nurses provided exceptional care, ensuring she received the best treatment. At 11 months, Malena took her first steps, and we noticed silent seizure-like symptoms. We are now seeking a diagnosis at another children's hospital. Despite weight fluctuations and health problems, and being through so much since birth, Malena remains a shining light in our lives. She is an amazing two year old little girl. We are hopeful that we will soon uncover the underlying cause of her symptoms and find the answers we have been praying for.

From life-saving interventions to compassionate, family-centered care, our NICU team is here for newborns like Malena every step of the way.
