Why Is My CCPR Clinic Visit So Long?

The Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction (CCPR) was created to be a “one stop shop” for the most complex colorectal patients and their needs. Instead of having multiple clinic appointments all over the hospital, we bring all the necessary doctors, nurses, and psychosocial team members to one clinic for one big visit. Our collaborative multidisciplinary center allows a patient to see up to eight different care providers depending on the unique needs of the patient.

The care providers you may see in our clinic include a colorectal surgeon, urologist, gynecologist, advanced practice nurse/physician assistant, wound ostomy nurse, psychologist, child life specialist, and social worker. Each of these team members plays a vital role in making sure all your needs are taken care of.  As you can imagine, seeing multiple care providers can make for a lengthy and extensive visit, especially if you are a new patient at our center. The clinic was designed with our patients’ comfort and ease of medical treatment in mind.

Another great benefit of our collaborative center is it allows our providers to work very closely together. Before entering your clinic room, our providers have often reviewed your chart and discussed the plan of care together. This is often the reason you may be waiting for the doctor to come in. They will then spend as much time as needed in your clinic room to review your medical history, test results, imaging, medical plan, and answer all your questions. You will never feel rushed, and you can always trust that the providers are on the same page when making decisions together.

We also perform and teach various procedures in our clinic that can make for an extended visit. If you are being taught a new procedure, we want to make sure you feel completely confident before you leave our clinic. We involve our Child Life specialists in all our procedures and will ensure your child is prepared and supported throughout the experience.

While your CCPR clinic visit may feel very long, it is only to ensure we are providing the highest quality of care to you and your family. We believe this ultimately saves time in the long run by having fewer appointments. To make the long clinic visit go as smooth as possible we recommend bringing a favorite toy, activity, tablet, lots of snacks, and any extra care items like diapers or ostomy supplies.
