Trauma Program

We’re improving orthopaedic trauma outcomes using a unique OR management approach.

As Ohio’s first designated Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Nationwide Children’s receives one of the highest volumes of trauma patients in the state of Ohio. The trauma team includes experts in orthopaedic surgery, working closely with emergency department physicians to assess and prioritize multi-injury issues.

As the director of Orthopaedic Trauma, Dr. Allan Beebe, leads the team in a non-traditional surgical management process where each day, there is an operating room, orthopaedic surgeon and surgical support staff dedicated to treating the orthopaedic cases that come in through the emergency department, streamlining the clinical management of trauma patients. In cases where extremity trauma is severe, the orthopedic team includes experts in plastic and reconstructive surgery, micro-vascular reconstruction, and limb reconstruction and salvage.

The high patient volume also provides surgeons with a robust archive of outcomes data and teams are able to conduct in-depth research into trauma surgery techniques, optimal healing conditions and infection control.
