Jennifer Muszynski, MD, a critical care physician and a principal investigator in the Center for Clinical and Translational Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital, has been appointed associate chief clinical research officer for research informatics.

“In this new role, Dr. Muszynski will champion the data science needs of clinician-researchers, not only to serve as a vital link between clinical research and data sciences, but also to significantly contribute to the advancement of data science applications in clinical research, strengthening the integration of clinical insights in data-driven decision-making,” said Dennis Durbin, MD, MSCE, president, Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's.

Dr. Muszynski will report to Chief Clinical Research Officer Cynthia Gerhardt, PhD, and work collaboratively with leaders from the Information Technology Research and Innovation team, associate division chiefs for research and the associate chief data sciences officer for biomedical informatics.

Her key responsibilities will include ensuring education and data literacy for faculty, improving data access, advising on best practices for data use and advocating for the needs of clinician-researchers.

“As data technologies continue to advance, we have the opportunity to leverage informatics and data science to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical research, to learn from the care that we provide, and to keep improving care for the children we treat,” Dr. Muszynski noted. “I’m a clinician first, but my role helping patients reach their best outcomes is also why I conduct research. Utilizing informatics is a natural evolution in the translational care and research continuum.”

“Integrating clinical care and research is at the heart of the Nationwide Children's strategic plan. Effectively leveraging our data science capabilities and expertise will move us closer to achieving that strategic goal,” said Dr. Durbin. “I’m excited to see Dr. Muszynski bring her extensive knowledge and experience to this role.”
