Dr. William E. Shiels, II, Awarded the Dr. Floyd J. Trenery Memorial Medal at the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (AOCR) Convention

Nationwide Children’s Hospital Chief of Radiology Receives Prestigious Radiology Award

William E. Shiels, II, DO, FAOCR, was awarded the 2011 Dr. Floyd J. Trenery Memorial Medal at the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (AOCR) Annual Convention held in Palm Beach, Florida in early April. The Dr. Floyd J. Trenery Memorial Medal is the highest honor bestowed to a member of the AOCR.

Dr. Trenery was an influential leader in the organization of the AOCR and in the field of radiology, specifically recognized for his work in radiotherapy as applied to cancer.

“Dr. Shiels is well-respected by his peers for being a renowned pediatric radiologist, researcher, educator, inventor and author,” said Pamela Smith, executive director of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology. “Dr. Shiels received this award for his involvement in AOCR Continuing Medical Education Activities including providing didactic lectures and developing CME programs.”

Dr. Shiels, chief of Radiology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and president of Children’s Radiological Institute, Inc., has served on numerous AOCR committees since 1992. He was a member of the board of directors from 1993-2007, held the role of president of AOCR from 2004-2005 and was also awarded the title of Fellow in 2002.

In addition to his involvement in AOCR, Dr. Shiels, also clinical professor of Radiology, Pediatrics and Biomedical Engineering at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, has presented numerous lectures worldwide on his primary radiological areas such as interventional radiology and ultrasound. His clinical focus is treating infants and children with vascular malformations, bone cysts and bone tumors as well as congenital and acquired abnormalities of the head and neck. His clinical research focuses in the areas of bone cyst and bone tumor ablation, soft tissue foreign body removal and percutaneous treatment of lymphatic malformations. His educational research focuses on training systems for interventional radiology, specifically for procedural competency development and maintenance training.
