Muscular Dystrophy Clinic Specialists

Our multidisciplinary team is the foundation of our clinic and what sets us apart from other programs. The combined expertise of specialists in neuromuscular disorders, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, and other disciplines coordinates patient care – all within one location, during one clinic visit. While some testing and referrals to additional specialists may require additional scheduling, we strive to limit the need for multiple appointments.

Neurology and Neuromuscular Disorders

Our neurologists have specialized training in neuromuscular disorders and they combine this expertise with groundbreaking research and the clinic’s multidisciplinary team. They serve as one of the key touch points within the integrated team and manage aspects of the disease that impact the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Cardiology

Our multidisciplinary clinic provides cardiology services from pediatric cardiologists whospecialize in neuromuscular disorders such as Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. Cardiac testing is coordinated with the visit to provide a streamlined and convenient approach to families who travel great distances, with some testing performed right in the clinic.

Pulmonary Medicine and Respiratory Therapy

Pediatric pulmonologists who specialize in neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy are available to our patients in the multidisciplinary clinic. Pulmonary function testing is performed at each visit by our respiratory therapists in the clinic for added convenience.

Physical and Occupational Therapy

Both physical and occupational therapies are provided at the clinic visit to help assess and monitor function. Patients can get assistance with splints and bracing, home equipment, and assistive devices. On-site vendors are also available to assist with equipment repairsand orders.

Gastroenterology and Nutrition

Integrated into the multidisciplinary clinic are specialists who provide care for patients experiencing difficulty with gastrointestinal digestion/constipation as well as nutrition.

Genetics

The multidisciplinary clinic provides a licensed genetic counselor to assist families in understanding the genetic path of specific disorders and potential future risks associated in families with heredity or congenital disorders.

Social Work and Additional Support Services

Providing support for our patients and their families are a top priority. Social workers are leaders in making sure people get the help they need, when they need it, from the best resources available. Our team also works very closely with the Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps and other resources to assist our families.
