Biography

Dr. Mangray's diagnostic focus for much of his career has been on pediatric surgical pathology with primary special interests in gastrointestinal and liver pathology, and tumors of the kidney and the endocrine system. To serve the needs of the department and its patients, over the last six years he has been honing his skills in medical renal pathology, which has been quite fulfilling.

As chief, he is focused on advancing the operational and academic mission of the department. Having an extremely talented and visionary team of faculty leaders in the different sections who are at the forefront of their profession, are committed to the highest quality of patient care, and application of the latest technologies has been a rewarding experience. He has been supported by an outstanding administrative and managerial team that has facilitated execution of the department's strategic goals. An example of the team's impactful expertise is highlighted by the microbiology team being first in central Ohio to bring COVID-19 testing online within a month of the onset of the pandemic in the USA.

He has worked successfully with NCH leadership to realize: An ongoing multi-million-dollar facilities renovation; Investment in a diagnostic immunology laboratory in 2018 that serves as a national reference laboratory for unique testing; Implementation of whole slide imaging (WSI) digital pathology with the opportunity for remote diagnosis and reporting; and the upcoming implementation of the EPIC Beaker laboratory information system.

It was a privilege for him to help coordinate between the diagnostic pathology team, the Biopathology Center (BPC), and the Institute of Genomic Medicine (IGM) at NCH for the molecular characterization initiative (MCI) in the Children’s Oncology Group’s fight against childhood cancer. He is now exploring artificial intelligence (AI) applications in different sections of the laboratory for diagnostic and research opportunities in the pediatric setting
