Biography

Reynold Ly, PhD, comes to his position at Nationwide Children’s Institute of Genomic Medicine as clinical laboratory director. He did his doctoral training focusing on somatic pharmacogenomics in Dr. Liewei Wang’s laboratory at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where he earned his PhD in Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He completed a fellowship in clinical pharmacology in Dr. Todd Skaar’s laboratory at Indiana University (IU) on the application of next-generation sequencing in clinical pharmacogenomics testing and the study of rare genetic variants behind adverse drug reactions. He then underwent training as a laboratory genetics & genomics (LGG) fellow in clinical molecular genetics, cytogenetics, next-generation sequencing, and pharmacogenomics at IU. During his LGG fellowship, he helped to validate and expand targeted DPYD testing to identify individuals at risk for 5-fluourouracil toxicity and helped to identify novel alleles in pharmacogenes.

He is a member of the Association of Molecular Pathology (AMP) Pharmacogenomics Working Group for standardizing clinically relevant alleles for clinical pharmacogenomics testing and serves on the CYP2D6 gene expert panel for the Pharmacogene Variation Consortium. His research and clinical interests include test validation, application of next-generation sequencing in the diagnosis of undiagnosed rare diseases and clinical pharmacogenomics testing, and the study of rare variants behind extreme adverse drug reactions.
