Michael R. Stenger, MD

Michael Stenger, MD, is a member of the Section of Neonatology at Nationwide Children's Hospital, an investigator in the Center for Perinatal Research at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The primary focus of Dr. Stenger's research is the role of nitric oxide and hyperoxia on lung growth and development. On the one hand, NO can combine with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO2) or with superoxide to form the potent oxidant peroxynitrite, both of which have been shown to cause lung injury. In contrast, NO may also act as an antioxidant and may protect against cellular damage and cytotoxicity caused by reactive oxygen species. Currently, a newborn mouse model is used while future studies will involve human samples such as tracheal aspirates to evaluate the impact of nitric oxide on lung growth and development.
