Biography

Karen B. Tabern, PsyD, currently serves as the Psychology Supervisor/Clinical Coordinator for the Autism Outpatient Psychotherapy Program at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASD). Dr. Tabern provides supervision, training, and oversight of behavioral health services provided to children and adolescents with autism. Supervision and training is provided primarily to an outpatient team of social workers and professional clinical counselors, but includes psychometricians, postdoctoral fellows, psychology interns, practicum students, and other behavioral health clinicians. She is responsible for the administrative oversight of the team and program development. In addition to her primary role, Dr. Tabern provides education and training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to behavioral health therapists and clinicians.

Dr. Tabern obtained her PsyD in clinical psychology, with a certificate in organizational concepts and management, from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2007. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in behavioral health, providing clinical treatment and evaluation with children and adolescents. From 2008 to 2014, Dr. Tabern served as a clinical psychologist for the Family Support Program at the Center for Family Safety and Healing. She provided trauma specific treatment to children and adolescents who have experienced abuse, neglect, or exposure to violence. During her time with the Family Support Program, Dr. Tabern participated in the development and implementation of a SAMHSA grant funded program combining Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). This program provided intervention to adolescents who experienced significant trauma and were presenting with high risk behaviors, including suicidality. Dr. Tabern continues to support efforts to prevent trauma and suicide in children and teens with autism in her current position at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
