Carlos E. Alvarez, PhD
Contact Information
Dr. Alvarez’s long-term interests are in therapeutic-target discovery, development of experimental animal models (NOT including dogs) and therapies, and medical translation in companion animals and humans. His primary research area is comparative genomics of genetically complex traits. The main approach he uses is canine genetics in pets and working dog cohorts. Among his focus areas are behavior, psychopathology, cancer, and pleiotropy.
Dr. Alvarez also studies molecular pharmacology of alpha arrestins in cell culture and mouse models. That work centers on the physiological roles of alpha arrestins (incl. ARRDC3) in normal and cancerous cells. Dr. Alvarez’s research program has been supported by the DHS (active), NIH, and DoD. His pediatric cancer investigations were funded the AKC Canine Health Foundation (active), Scottish Deerhound Club of America (active), and Morris Animal Foundation. His pre- and post-doctoral fellows have been funded by NIH, Caja Madrid, and Stanton Foundation.
