Benjamin Sunkel, PhD, is a Principal Investigator in the Institute for Genomic Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Ben received degrees in Biochemistry from Denison University (BS) and The Ohio State University (PhD), and his research interests focus on epigenetic mechanisms of gene expression regulation in pediatric cancers.

Research

The Sunkel lab is investigating gene expression patterns in pediatric sarcomas that result from gene mutations and other perturbations impacting chromatin remodeling complexes and transcription factor networks. The lab utilizes epigenomic techniques including ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq as well as global gene expression profiling by RNA-seq to dissect mechanisms underlying altered transcription, with the goal of identifying vulnerabilities and new therapeutic targets in diverse childhood cancers.
