Let’s Talk About the Benadryl Challenge: What Parents Should Know

The Benadryl Challenge has been on social media since 2020 but has recently become popular again. The challenge involves taking multiple, large doses of diphenhydramine (also known as Benadryl) to induce hallucinations.

What is diphenhydramine?

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine medication, commonly used for the treatment of seasonal allergies and allergic reactions. Common side effects of this medication include drowsiness, dry mouth, difficulty urinating, and sensations of a racing heart (palpitations).

What are the risks of this challenge?

Ingesting high doses of this medication can cause more serious health problems, including slurred speech, large pupils, increased body temperature, irregular heart rhythms, seizures, and even death. As the dose increases, the risk for these serious side effects also increases. Everyone should be aware of the risks and harmful consequences of participating in this challenge.

Teenagers are the most likely group to participate in this challenge. Everyone of all ages should say no this challenge and others like it.

What to do?

Like any other social media trend, this challenge should be part of a bigger discussion about the dangers of peer pressure with your child. These posts are often shared to get clicks and views, without warning about the potential dangers involved with these kinds of challenges. Teenagers tend to believe they are invincible and the desire to “go viral” or collect likes and comments can unfortunately get in the way of their better judgement. Monitor their social media accounts and have open communication regarding appropriate use.

If you or your child show serious symptoms such as seizures or coma, dial 9-1-1 right away for help. For other symptoms or questions, please seek immediate guidance from the Poison Control Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 where specially trained nurses and pharmacists can talk you through what to watch for and to help advise you on what further action is needed.
