The Importance of Scheduling a Follow Up Appointment

After leaving the emergency room or crisis department, knowing what to do next can be really overwhelming. Scheduling a follow up appointment within seven days after leaving the emergency room can have a positive impact on your child’s health.

The “After Visit Summary” paperwork you got before you left the emergency room will have instructions on how to make a follow up appointment. This is also where your safety plan is located. We know it can be challenging to make it to appointments. Make a plan ahead of time for how you and your child will get there. Ask your support network like family, friends and community members for help – or see if a telehealth option is available.

It is important to attend your appointment and actively participate in your child’s care. However, we know things come up and sometimes you have to reschedule. Call as soon as possible to make a new appointment. For more information, reach out to your pediatrician.
