Restoring Quality of Life for Patients With Asthma

Asthma Program

Asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness and can significantly impact quality of life with missed school days, difficulty with physical activity, and exacerbations resulting in Emergency Department visits and/or hospitalization. At Nationwide Children's Hospital, outpatient care is delivered by asthma specialists in both the Section of Allergy/Immunology as well as Pulmonary Medicine. Both areas offer teams of physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses to provide state of the art asthma care through diagnostic testing, up to date treatment strategies, and comprehensive education for patients and families.

Nationwide Children's Hospital is ranked by U.S. News & World Report for Pulmonary Medicine.

About

Patients are often referred for asthma specialty care when there is concern regarding the proper diagnosis, co-morbid conditions such as allergic rhinitis or obesity, difficulty in obtaining good asthma control, or need for additional testing. Both Allergy/Immunology and Pulmonary offer lung function testing with spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide (measure of eosinophilic inflammation). Additional diagnostic tests, such as skin testing for allergies is performed through Allergy/Immunology, whereas bronchoscopy is available through Pulmonary Medicine.

In addition, Nationwide Children's Hospital offers a Complex Asthma Clinic that is staffed by both Allergy and Pulmonary for patients who have a history of severe asthma exacerbations requiring prior hospitalization, ICU admission, or more than one Emergency Department visit for asthma within a year. This clinic offers comprehensive care with diagnostic testing, education, as well as availability of social workers to help with challenges in obtaining optimal asthma control.
