Biography

Balamurugan N. Appakalai, PhD, is a principal investigator in the Center for Clinical and Translational Research and a member of the pancreatic islet cell transplantation program at Nationwide Children’s.

Dr. Appakalai has extensive experience in processing human pancreases for clinical islet auto-transplantation and allo-transplantation for the treatment of brittle diabetes. He has been working in this field for over 25 years, focusing on advancing pancreatic islet cell isolation and transplantation to achieve long-term insulin-free status in patients.

He has been actively involved in the grant review process for NIH, ADA, JDRF and other international funding agencies and has presented nationally and internationally on his research on islet cell transplantation.
