Medical Weight Management Program

The family-based medical weight management programs are designed for children ages 2 and older. Our commitment to you at the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition is to support you and your child every step of the way, and to help you establish long-lasting healthy lifestyle behavior changes.

An initial evaluation is conducted to determine which interventions and treatment options maybe best for your child and family.

The criteria for the Center for Healthy Weight is:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of 95% or higher
  • Patient must have an established Primary Care Provider

Once a referral is received, you will receive a call to schedule an initial visit in the Center for Healthy Weight. If you are unable to be reached after two attempts, your referral will be closed, and your referring medical provider will be notified.

New Patient Visit

During an initial appointment in our clinic, patients and families will meet with a doctor or nurse practitioner for a complete medical exam. Additionally, your child may also meet with a dietitian or physical therapist to begin developing a plan to improve eating habits and increase physical activity.

If your child has not completed fasting blood work in a year or more, Center medical providers may order labs. If your child’s visit takes place in the morning, the labs can be completed following the appointment and patients may be asked to fast (nothing to eat or drink). Afternoon appointments will not be expected to fast and can complete any necessary labs at another time.

A few factors may affect the length of an appointment, and so they can last between 45 minutes to two hours.

The appointments take place at Livingston Ambulatory CenterHilliard Close To Home Center, or our Westerville Surgery Center.

Follow-Up Visit

After your initial visit, The Center often recommends seeing your child every 4-6 weeks to follow up on treatment goals and plan. At this visit, patients and families will meet with a doctor or nurse practitioner, as well as a dietitian or physical therapist. Psychologist and social worker visits are included as needed. Follow-up visits will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
