Biography

Drawing on his leadership experience, his duties as a board member, and his role as a medical staff executive member, Vinay Prasad, MD, seeks to develop multi-departmental standards in patient care and patient experience. His expertise and contributions in areas such as leadership development, colorectal disease pathology, placental pathology, and mentoring extend beyond Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University to national and international levels.

Dr. Prasad has authored or co-authored two textbook chapters and 48 peer-reviewed papers. He presented 15 platform papers at national meetings, and contributed to 37 poster presentations. He has also been invited to speak at workshops and other international and national venues 37 times.

In 2017, he was the featured speaker for the American Pathology Foundation (APF) on "Heuristics and Bias in Laboratory Medicine: Improving Patient Safety & Reducing Errors One Sample at a Time." This experience helped establish him as a leader in the field. Subsequently, in 2019, he developed a patient safety course for the Society for Pediatric Pathology, which was offered as a workshop from 2019 to 2021: "Role of Bias in Pediatric Pathology: Preventing Errors and Enhancing Patient Safety One Child at a Time." This course served as a catalyst for the development of a robust curriculum in patient safety. Vetted by the American Board of Pathology, it became the first pathology course accredited and offered by the American Board of Pathology as a patient safety course for maintenance of certification (MOC) for board certification.

As a leader at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Prasad collaborated with the highly acclaimed Vanderbilt Pathology Education Research Group (VPERG). As a core faculty member, he developed curricula and taught courses on errors in pathology. One of the courses he designed, "Bias & Cognitive Errors in Pathology: Opportunities in Education & Training,"  focused on addressing cognitive biases and improving pathology education and training.
