In emergencies, every second counts, and teaching your child how and when to call 911 can be crucial in saving lives. As parents, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our kids know what to do in a crisis. By understanding the importance of 911 and how to use it, children can become prepared, confident, and capable of getting help when it’s needed the most.

When Should Kids Call 911?

Children need to know the difference between situations requiring a 911 call and those that do not. Emergencies warranting a call include situations where someone is hurt or in danger, such as a medical emergency, a fire, or witnessing a crime. Teach your child to trust their instincts—if they think someone’s life or safety is at risk, it’s better to call 911.

How to Use 911 Effectively

Practice with your child so they know exactly what to do if they ever need to make that important call. Explain the steps:

  • Stay Calm: Encourage your child to stay as calm as possible. Remind them that the operator is there to help.
  • Know the Basics: Make sure your child knows their full name, address, and phone number. This information is crucial for emergency responders to find them quickly.
  • Answer Questions: The operator will ask questions to understand the situation better. Teach your child to listen carefully and answer as clearly as they can.
  • Don’t Hang Up: Remind your child to stay on the line until the operator tells them it’s okay to hang up. The dispatcher may need more information or provide essential instructions.

Practice Makes Perfect

Role-playing different scenarios can help reinforce these lessons. Set up practice calls (using an unplugged phone or a pretend situation) so your child can get comfortable with the process. The more they practice, the more confident they’ll be in an emergency.

Teaching your child how to use 911 is one of the most important lessons they can learn. By explaining when and how to make an emergency call, you empower them with the knowledge and skills they need to respond effectively in a crisis. Remember, being ready makes all the difference.
