What is a Contusion or Bruise?

Contusions are one of the most common types of injuries occurring in active children.

A contusion, or bruise, is caused by a direct blow to the body that can cause damage to the surface of the skin and to deeper tissues as well depending on the severity of the blow.

What are the Signs or Symptoms of a Contusion or Bruise?

Those suffering from a contusion may experience:

  • Discoloration of the skin
  • Swelling
  • Tightness in the affected muscle or stiffness in the affected joint

How are Contusions or Bruises Treated?

Initial treatment for contusion should include rest, icing the affected area for 20 minutes, and applying a compression wrap to help minimize swelling. If there is an accompanying open wound, keep the area clean and bandaged.
