Steven Smith, MD, FAAP, FAAHPM, is medical director for the Hospice and Home-Based Palliative Care Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in addition to being on the inpatient consultative palliative care or AIM team.
Dr. Smith graduated from Mercer University School of Medicine and completed residency in pediatrics and fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. His passions include caring for children with medical complexity and home-based palliative care and hospice. Research interests include improving quality in home-based palliative care and hospice within pediatrics, prognostication in pediatrics and identification of high acuity patients enrolled in home based palliative care and his publications have specifically analyzed the impact of home-based care on healthcare outcomes and utilization.
Nationally, Dr. Smith has participated in committees through the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, now the Alliance for Care at Home as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He has contributed to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Pediatrics Review and Education Program (PREP) in developing pediatric palliative care educational material and contributed to developing the 2023 edition of the NHPCO Pediatric Facts and Figures.
