YOU Matter Program – Providing Second Victim Resources for Hospital Staff

At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, we support the emotional and mental wellbeing of employees dealing with work related, and potentially traumatic stressors, through the YOU Matter program.

The YOU Matter program consists of five pillars aimed at preventing and reducing distress and burnout in staff and trainees particularly after an adverse event. Individual and group support is provided for staff of Nationwide Children’s Hospital 24 hours a day. If a staff member is experiencing a normal reaction to a stressful event or outcome, resources are available to help.

Did You Know?

  • Since its 2013 Pharmacy Department pilot, the program has provided support to hundreds of employees and has conducted research showing the effectiveness of peer support following adverse events.
  • Our program is one of the largest peer support programs in the country.
  • The program started with eight peer supporters and grew to 700+ trained peer supporters today.
  • Trained volunteer peer supporters come from a variety of clinical and non-clinical disciplines and provide peer support following medical/medication errors, traumatic situations or even near miss.

Leadership Toolkit

Peers from all disciplines within Nationwide Children’s are trained to better support one another after potentially traumatic patient care situations.

Trained peer supporters are identified by a green badge buddy that says “You Matter.”

Nationwide Children's Hospital Critical Response Team

The team typically assembles for events affecting more than five staff persons and/or multiple departments/units.

The multidisciplinary team of employees who have been trained in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is often alerted if there is an event that affects staff’s emotional and mental well-being, and is beyond the scope of Second Victim Peer Supporters.

Stress First Aid Individual Crisis Intervention/Support Services

Licensed master’s level clinicians offer Stress First Aid including screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment when necessary to address the needs of staff who would like additional professional support to increase their resilience skills, and to cope with work related traumatic stressors and burnout issues.

These staff support clinicians are primarily housed in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Units and also work with staff in other areas, as appropriate.

Rounds focus on the psychosocial impacts of caring for patients and their families. Providing patient and family care in a system where “Everything Matters” involves some benefits and some costs to caregivers. These multidisciplinary rounds provide a forum to come together and discuss cases that have impacted staff, in order to learn from and support each other.

Schwartz Center Rounds® improve communication among teams and enhance the preservation of a compassionate health care system that values and honors staff providing excellent care to our patients and families.

The program provides eight confidential counseling sessions at no cost to employees of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

This service exists to encourage the active resolution of personal and work-related stress reactions.

How We Help Other Organizations Support Their Employees

The YOU Matter Second Victim Program trainings are three-hour sessions with various speakers and activities that teach frontline staff and management the skills needed to conduct one-on-one peer and group encounters.

Nationwide Children’s has worked with over 35 hospitals to provide guidance and onsite training to initiate peer support programs at their institutions.
