Biography

Leif Nelin, MD, is division chief of Neonatology and the Dean Jeffers Endowed Chair of Neonatology at Nationwide Children's Hospital, and professor of Pediatrics and chief of Neonatology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Nelin is dedicated to maintaining and continuing to develop the culture of best outcomes throughout the Neonatal Network at Nationwide Children’s and the innovative strategic plan built on the One Team concept.

Clinically, Dr. Nelin is interested in extremely preterm infants and helped to develop the Small Baby Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital between 2004 and 2010. Dr. Nelin has become particularly interested in those extremely preterm infants that go on to develop the most common co-morbidity of extreme preterm birth, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Since 2010 he has been involved in the continued development and evolution of the Comprehensive Center for BPD (CCBPD) at Nationwide Children’s. The CCBPD is the home to the only dedicated in-patient unit for infants with BPD.

Dr. Nelin’s current research interest is in developing therapies and approaches to improve long-term outcomes of infants with established BPD, starting with identifying those patients at highest risk for adverse post-NICU outcomes. Dr. Nelin has become involved in several national groups focused on improving outcomes in severe BPD patients. For example, he is an active participant in the severe BPD focus group of the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium. Dr. Nelin also worked with Dr. Steve Abman, a pediatric pulmonologist from Denver, to found and implement the BPD Collaborative, which is a collection of centers that have dedicated BPD teams committed to improving outcomes of infants with severe BPD. The BPD Collaborative has grown from seven institutions to 38 institutions and Dr. Nelin is currently the Chair of the Executive Board.
