Training Core
The outstanding training environment in muscle disease pathogenesis and treatment that exists in Columbus, Ohio at Nationwide Children’s and OSU today is difficult to rival and arguably unsurpassed in any other city in the world. In addition to being an epicenter for gene therapy of neuromuscular disease, Columbus is also home to a remarkable number of scientists and clinicians (in the OSU/Nationwide Children's Center of Muscle Health and Neuromuscular Diseases) that have for years been providing key leadership and training for trainees at all levels. Trainees include high school students (Nationwide Children's Futures Matter program for underrepresented and underprivileged students); undergraduate/post-bac students (OSU Discovery PREP program to assist underrepresented students in gaining admittance to post-graduate schools); graduate students and post-docs (a NIH T32 training program at OSU and the AWRI Trainee Association, RITA); and early-stage physician scientists at Nationwide Children's/OSU in Neurology and Gene Therapy (neuromuscular fellowships).
Specific Aims were designed to support individualized training of Wellstone fellows, promote trainee career advancement, recruit the best and brightest minds to the neuromuscular disease field and organize new training courses and workshops to benefit the entire Wellstone community as well as the greater scientific community as a whole.

Fifteenth Annual Myology Course
Presented by Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Ohio State University,
and Nationwide Children's Hospital Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Specialized Research Center’s Training Core
August 31 to September 4, 2026 | In Person
Featuring faculty from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, The Ohio State University, the Nationwide Children's/OSU Center for Muscle Health & Neuromuscular Disorders and invited national and international experts, this in-person course is oriented toward medical and doctorate level trainees, with a goal of providing an up-to-date survey of neuromuscular diseases. The expert faculty will address clinical syndromes, mechanisms of pathogenesis, molecular therapeutics and aspects of career development.
This is the only workshop of its kind in the United States, featuring a mix of basic and clinical science lectures followed by specific training in either clinical treatment protocols or basic science laboratory techniques. The goal of these courses is to help trainees go beyond a basic understanding of muscle disease by gaining insights and experience from experts in the field. We ultimately want to help prepare the next generation of clinicians and translational researchers for successful research careers.
Both clinical- and laboratory-based trainees are welcome. We have structured the course so that both groups will be together for morning lectures. In the afternoon, clinical trainees will participate in more focused clinical activities while laboratory trainees will participate in wet-lab activities. At the end of each day, the groups will rejoin for a keynote lecture.
