Biography

Thomas J. Scharschmidt, MD is the Director of Orthopaedic Oncology, Department of Orthopaedics, Nationwide Children's Hospital. He received his MD from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 2003 and did his residency at Summa Health System from 2003-2008. Dr. Scharschmidt completed a fellowship at the University of Washington and Seattle Children?s in Musculoskeletal Oncology in 2009 and recently completed a second fellowship in Advanced Reconstruction and Tumors of the Spine at the Texas Back Institute. Dr. Scharschmidt?s clinical interests include bone and soft tissue sarcomas in adults and children, benign bone and soft tissue tumors in adults and children, complex limb reconstruction, metastatic carcinoma to bone, metabolic bone disease, musculoskeletal infections and spine tumors. Research interests include basic biology and the molecular mechanisms of sarcoma and prosthetic implant design and technique. Dr. Scharschmidt was June 2012 Educator of the Year in Orthopaedics at Ohio State University, January 2010 Medical Student Teacher of the Year, and January 2010 Ohio State University Medical Center Surgeon of the Month.
