Biography

Sudarshan R. Jadcherla, MD, is a member of the Section of Neonatology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, a Principal Investigator at the Center for Perinatal Research at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and a Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and the Medical Director of the Neonatal and Infant Feeding Disorders Program. Dr. Jadcherla’s research focuses on maturational and dysfunctional mechanisms of neonatal feeding and aero-digestive disorders. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Jadcherla is conducting innovative research in elucidating the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms involved with swallowing, aero-digestive protection, gastroesophageal reflux disease and chronic lung disease of infancy. Understanding the mechanisms during maturation, whether functional or dysfunctional, will form the basis for evidence based diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. The long term goal of his program is to translate clinical research initiatives to crib-side in the neonatal ICU community and beyond by solving complex issues pertinent to feeding safety and airway protection. His program strives to improve feeding related quality of life among high risk neonates, lowers burden of care and hospital costs.

Clinical Interests

  • Neonatal Feeding Enhancement Program: Quality Initiative
This novel program was developed by Dr. Jadcherla at the Nationwide Children's Hospital NICUs, with a focus on accelerating the development of feeding milestones in a targeted and timely manner by applying the model of inter-disciplinary interactions and timely investigations in ensuring feeding success. This model program enhances educational and skill competencies of all the feeding providers (Physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, lactation consultants, nutritionists, and parents). Specifically, dissemination of the peer reviewed state-of-the-art information is undertaken and questions related to individualized feeding care plans addressed. The outcomes of infants in this program are reviewed to improve NICU performance.
  • The Neonatal and Infant Feeding Disorders Program
This unique program was started by Dr. Jadcherla at the Nationwide Children's Hospital with a focus on the diagnosis of gastrointestinal dysmotility mechanisms among high-risk infants. Infants with feeding difficulty are evaluated. Studies performed included esophageal manometry, gastroduodenal manometry, evaluation of oro-pharyngo esophageal motility, pH studies, and pH-Impedance studies. The methods used to evaluate are: manometric methods, impedance methods, pH methods, diagnostic consultations on neonatal GI issues and multidisciplinary evaluation. These studies help in the diagnosis, prognosis, and also identify the mechanism of feeding difficulty. An infant-disease specific feeding practice algorithm is developed based on the mechanistic diagnosis.

Areas of Interest:

  • Under another NIH supported research (sub project PI: Jadcherla-PO1- 068051, Program project PI: R. Shaker, Medical College of Wisconsin), we are investigating the sensory-motor aspects of Vago-vagal reflexes pertinent to the neonatal human esophagus and airway interactions during maturation and chronic lung disease of infancy.
  • Under a NIH supported research (PI: Jadcherla-RO1- 068158), we are investigating the neurosensory and motor aspects of the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of swallowing, esophageal function, and gastroesophageal reflux. Using the state-of-the-art techniques, we are investigating brain-foregut interactions involving integrative physiology and pathophysiology of Vago-vagal reflexes involved in state alertness (sleep), perinatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and gastroesophageal reflux disease in human infants.
