Medical device and imaging advancements are providing orthopaedic physicians an unprecedented level of control in treating and managing congenital, developmental and neuromuscular-related spine conditions. Our specialists not only use many of the latest techniques and technologies, but are also developing innovative surgical methods to improve outcomes and meet the individual needs of patients who have years of growth ahead of them.
We have taken the unique step of having two surgeons perform most spine deformity surgeries. This approach has reduced procedure time, blood loss, risk of infection and exposure to anesthesia, translating into an average hospital stay of just three to four days for most patients.
Nationwide Children’s was the first hospital in Ohio to receive access to the Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR™) device indicated for treatment of thoracic insufficiency syndrome. Candidates for spinal procedures undergo an intensive evaluation of chronological and biological bone age in order to develop a long-term treatment plan of surgical or non-surgical interventions that will allow optimal skeletal growth.
Treatment expertise includes scoliosis and kyphosis, including congenital and idiopathic types, as well as curvatures from neuromuscular-related conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord-related traumas.
