Sarah O’Brien, MD, MSc, is a pediatric hematologist in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center, an investigator in the Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice at Nationwide Children’s Research Institute and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She also leads a multi-disciplinary hematology and adolescent gynecology clinic at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Her clinical and research interests include pediatric thrombosis and thromboprophylaxis, the evaluation and diagnosis of mild bleeding disorders, and the intersections between hematology and women’s health. As a health services researcher, Dr. O’Brien has a particular interest in the use of large administrative databases, as well as decision analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Research Interests

Research Center:

Areas of Interest:

  • DVT Prevention in Pediatric and Adolescent Trauma Patients: Safety & Costs. In this study, we seek to identify which, if any, young trauma patients may truly benefit from the thromboprophylaxis strategies that have become standard of care in adults. The research will give clinicians a tool to identify young trauma patients who would benefit from LMWH prophylaxis. The results will be used to create child and adolescent-specific guidelines, thereby allowing clinicians to maximize patient safety and minimize costs when considering LMWH prophylaxis for a young trauma patient. AHRQ Small Research Grant Program (O'Brien) 09/07 - 09/09
  • Menorrhagia in adolescents
  • Iron deficiency in adolescent females
  • Dr. O'Brien is a pediatric hematologist whose research interests involve the application of health services research techniques to the field of pediatric thrombosis. Her current research focuses on the development of a decision analysis model to address the health effects and costs of universal screening for hereditary thrombophilia in children with a first episode of deep venous thrombosis (DVT).
  • Quality of care in sickle cell anemia
  • New anticoagulants in pediatrics
  • Thrombophilia Screening in Children with Venous Thromboembolism: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis. Dr. O'Brien received the 2006 Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Scholar, awarded to the recipient of an ASH Scholar Award with the highest scored clinical/translational research application. The research involves the development of a decision analysis model to address the health effects and costs of universal screening for hereditary thrombophilia in children with a first episode of deep venous thrombosis (DVT).
  • Management of pediatric ITP
  • Thromboprophylaxis Evaluation and diagnosis of mild bleeding disorders
