Volunteering with Reach Out and Read®

Clinic Volunteers

As a Reach Out and Read volunteer, you will help to make the waiting time more comfortable for children and families. Our volunteers provide exposure to literature and music, while reinforcing developing language skills. Volunteers transform the waiting area into a positive learning environment.

  • Introduce language development through a thematic based curriculum which meets state standards in science, language and math

  • Read books to children while they are waiting to see their doctor

  • Incorporate books and music to create a fun interactive learning environment

  • Initiate interactive activities: coloring, puzzles, etc.

  • Introduce musical instruments and musical notation

  • Make reference information readily available for families such as library membership applications, local music resources, newsletters, and adult literacy information

Corporate & Group Volunteers

Giving back is important to many people, but time constraints often get in the way. Reach Out and Read offers three different opportunities conducive for organizations.

  • Adopt a Clinic: Groups of four choose a day, time and center to adopt (groups larger than four will pick more than one day/time/location). Members of the group then rotate volunteering each week. Each person will volunteer at least one 2 hour session per month.  Please contact Jodi Springer, Volunteer Coordinator for application and any further questions: or (614) 355-0520.

  • Book Sorting Bonanza: Our warehouse space stores new and gently used books for the Reach Out and Read program. Volunteers sort through the gently used books that have been donated. The sorting process allows us to inventory the donations and ensure we are providing only appropriate books to our patients. Once sorted, the books are sent to our Primary Care Centers to be distributed to patients in the waiting areas and exam rooms to encourage reading in the home. We have a Book Sorting Bonanza about once a month. The commitment for this role is one day only, usually for a 3-hour shift. There is no application process necessary to volunteer in this capacity. See Sign Up Genius for available dates/times.

  • Corporate Book Drives: Reach Out and Read accepts donations of new and gently-used books year-round. All materials including posters, flyers and donation boxes are provided. Pick up of donated items are included as well. If your corporation would like to host a book drive for Reach Out and Read, please contact Shareena Casey at or (614) 355-0519.
