Support Reach Out and Read

Good quality children’s books are the heart of Reach Out and Read® and essential to our program’s continued success. We rely heavily on the generous support of the central Ohio community to help us maintain our new and gently used book supply. Book donations are accepted year-round.

Why Support Reach Out and Read?

1. Research shows it works. Fourteen peer-reviewed research studies demonstrate that children served by the Reach Out and Read model are read to more often, have larger vocabularies, and develop stronger early reading skills.
2. Reach Out and Read is cost effective. Due to the high volume of books we purchase, we have developed relationships with publishers that are upwards of 50-60% off the retail price.
3. Reach Out and Read is doctor recommended. The Reach Out and Read model is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. In addition, Reach Out and Read is included in the “Bright Futures” guidelines of recommended practices for pediatric providers.

Your support not only helps Reach Out and Read to put books in the hands and homes of children who are growing up without them – it also helps to prepare children for academic success.

• $2,500 helps us provide the full, five-year program to 85 children
• $1,500 helps provide the Reach Out and Read program to 50 children
• $300 helps provide the Reach Out and Read program to 10 children
• $30 enables us to provide the full, five-year program to one child

Annual Community Book Drive

When: January – March
Each year the central Ohio community comes together to support Reach Out and Read through our 3 month book drive. During this time schools, organizations and individuals come together to:

1. Raise funds for the purchase new books – learn how you can contribute
2. Donate gently used books – see donation guidelines below.

Join Our Virtual Book Drive

By raising funds, our pediatricians can prescribe new books to preschool aged children during routine well-child visits. Through your monetary gift we are able to purchase books at deeply discounted prices.  Click here to get started.

Donate New and Gently-used Children’s Books

• New Books: Board Books or Books for children under five years of age
• Gently-Used Books: Up to a 4th grade reading level
• No torn cover or pages
• Culturally diverse - written in any language
• No books expressing religious or political views
• No romance novels
• No books published before 2000

Help benefit the Reach Out and Read Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital just by using your Kroger plus card. Sign up now at www.KrogerCommunityRewards.com.

Once your account is established, choose “Edit Kroger Community Rewards” and register your Kroger plus card as a supporter of organization #84925. Then simply use your plus card when you shop and Kroger will donate a percentage of your sale to Reach Out and Read. There is NO cost to you.
