PALS Course

Pediatric Advanced Life Support

Updated to reflect science in the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC, HeartCode® PALS Part 1 is a web-based, self-directed program that teaches healthcare providers knowledge and skills needed to recognize and prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children. Using eSimulation technology, students assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings where they can apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning about pediatric advanced life support.  First time users can expect the on-line portion to take 8-10 hours to complete.  Instructions on how to access the on-line portion of this course will be emailed to the participant 45 days before before their scheduled skills session.

After completing HeartCode PALS Part 1, students must successfully complete a hands-on skills practice and testing session (parts 2 and 3) with an AHA PALS Instructor. The skills testing stations include, I/O insertion, Respiratory adjuncts and bagging effectively, CPR, and Zoll 101.  The students will then participate in a Mock Code in our simulation room, focusing on Resuscitation Team Concept.

Students will receive an AHA PALS course completion card, valid for two years, upon successful completion of all three parts.

The goal of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course is to equip the student with the cognitive & psychomotor skills necessary to recognize, resuscitate, and stabilize the infant or child in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest.
