Nationwide Children’s Hospital staff and friends gathered last evening, Wednesday, September 2, to honor three recipients of the 2009 Career Contribution Awards. The special distinction is awarded by Nationwide Children’s medical staff to a select few of its most highly respected peers. The award is given to those who, in the eyes of their fellow physicians, have exemplified themselves through a lifetime commitment to maintaining the highest quality of health care service and helping Nationwide Children’s build a trademark reputation as a local, regional and national leader in pediatrics.
The 2009 recipients are as follows:
Willard B. Fernald, MD, General Pediatrics
William B. Fernald, MD, was appointed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital medical staff in 1956, and he has served as past medical staff president and chief resident. He has been president of the Columbus Civil Rights Council, president of the board of directors of the Yokefellow Institute and is past president of the Central Ohio Pediatric Society. Dr. Fernald served as a technical sergeant in the United States Army from 1943-46 and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1951. He is currently the medical director of Camp Hamwi and the Heinzerling Foundation, and is a clinical professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Fernald received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2005.
John R. Kean, MD, Orthopedics
John R. Kean, MD, was appointed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital medical staff in 1978 and was appointed chief of orthopedics in 2001. Dr. Kean’s hospital positions at Nationwide Children’s have included medical staff president, and for the past 25 years he served as director of the Cerebral Palsy Clinic. Dr. Kean is an alumnus of Temple University School of Medicine (1974) and has been president of the Ohio State Orthopedic Society. He is also currently a clinical assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is an active member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps and Gillespie Pediatric Study Group.
Leslie K. Mihalov, MD, Emergency Medicine
Leslie K. Mihalov, MD, was appointed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital medical staff in 1990 and has been chief of Emergency Medicine since 1998. Her hospital positions have included medical staff president and associated director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program. She is currently the associate medical director at Nationwide Children’s and she is also an associate professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Mihalov received her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo in 1984. She is involved in medical education at The Ohio State University College of Medicine Admissions Committee and serves on the editorial board of Pediatric Directions.
